JAN SWANSON | 9 Images

Jan is a self-taught artist who grew up in Asheville, NC. She prefers to work in oils and has a distinctive style that combines recognizable objects with a process-oriented style of painting. Jan’s work is sometimes graphic and sometimes more muddled in appearance. She uses a diverse subject matter that easily elicits the viewer to ask the questions “what” and “why.” There are often pattern elements to her work as well as a great contrast. Some works have strong drawing elements while others reveal worked texture in the paint.

Jan’s work is often inspired by memories from her childhood, but then the painting shifts into a new thing. She states that, “Many times what I start with doesn’t look remotely like what I end up with, but the layers that develop are appealing to me. My paintings usually are of things that aren’t quite right (like me).” Always intrigued with the unique qualities of everyday life, Jan strives to focus on those distinctions in her art. With recognizable images such as dogs, lamps, and other everyday objects, she is able to draw in the viewer and occasionally offer up some humor.
